Disclaimer: I think the Zman blog is great. However, I am going to disagree with his classic dissident right perspective about the Tara Reade hypocrisy.
The legacy right-wing media is working hard to breathe life into the story about Joe Biden sexually harassing a women decades ago. Tara Reade has been turning up on conservative chat shows to tell her story. Evidence to support her claims has been circulating around the internet. One can’t help but be impressed by the effort to locate old television show clips and old acquaintances familiar with the event. That, of course, raises suspicions about who is behind this effort.
As usual, the so-called conservatives are flabbergasted to learn that the media is working hard to ignore the story. The same people who were hyperventilating about the goofy old women accusing Bret Kavanaugh are now too busy fabricating stories about hero nurses to bother with politics. Here’s a piece by Reason Magazine wondering why the media is ignoring the story. Here’s a post by National Review about the media’s double standard. They are shocked by the hypocrisy.
Most people on this side of the great divide no longer pay attention to this stuff, as it is like watching an old movie that you liked at the time, but you now realize was not very good after all. The Legacy Right has not aged well. In fact, a lot of people struggle to admit that there was a time when they were really into this stuff. The truth is though, almost everyone on this side of the great divide used to be really into these tales of left-wing hypocrisy. It mattered for some reason.
It was once pointed out to me that people who have stood firm on the dissident Right (to borrow a term that Zman uses), tend to inevitably become curmudgeons. It is simply the result of being in a minority position ideologically over an extended period of time. You become suspicious of outsiders, you abhor the nominal Right’s gatekeepers, and want to not support any endeavor the nominal Right supports enthusiastically. These are all perfectly understandable human tendencies.
I disagree with that way of operating. First of all, this all rings of an attitude of the smug child who only wants to play with the toy if he’s the only child that gets to play with it, forever. Really? Like you weren’t going to talk about Hillary Clinton’s email scandal just because The National Review was also going to write an article about them?
Secondly, as I mentioned last week, I have serious doubts about Reade’s allegations as well as all of the sexual harassment/misconduct/rape shennanigans. And yes, I agree that being able to hold the woke crowd to its own standards does not work, at least, if the goal is to make them apologize or change their behavior. It won’t happen in a million years. The propaganda machines know their role, they do it to the best of their ability, and are not interested in such silly endeavors as truth or moral consistency.
However, that does not mean that many normies are uninterested in learning the truth or want to follow leaders who speak out of both sides of their mouth. While a great many people are firmly entrenched in their worldview, many are not. And it is for the people that are stranded in No Man’s Land that we should continue broadcast as loudly as possible the machine’s bullshit and how they fail to live up to their own standards. The machine won’t change, but exposing their failings can persuade those in the middle over to our side.
Lastly, this strategy of ignoring the mundane ignores won the central premises of war: The side with the greater morale usually wins. And besides losing battles outright, there is nothing that destroys morale more effortlessly than sowing dissension in the enemy camp.
Allow me to show you an example of how this played out with the Joe Biden, Tara Reade scandal. For weeks, the Right has been calling out the Leftist media for their failure to report on updates in the Tara Reade case, notably the vaulted CNN footage from 1993 when Reade’s mother called into Larry King Live and seemed to allude to Biden’s behavior toward her daughter. To reiterate, it does not prove anything, but it was certainly news worthy. In light of how the media shilled for the democrats in far less substantiated claims against Trump, Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and the whole #MeToo movement, this was an apparent deviation from their alleged moral code.
Finally, a certifiable Lefty decided to address the silence as Chris Hayes reported not only about Tara Reade, but also about the Left’s reticence at accepting the allegations. May I present to you the dissension. It was trending on Twitter this morning with #FireChrisHayes.
Sweet, sweet tears. Tears that fill my soul.
